A Ministry of Education (MOE) research study examined ways to improve learning English. In 1985, the Ministry introduced the Reading and English Acquisition Program (REAP) in 30 primary schools for Year 1 students.
REAP used books to improve language learning and create positive feelings about it. The programme included Shared Book and Language Experience Approaches, adapted for Singapore. Teachers got training and support to use this approach in their classrooms. Many studies compared students in REAP with those who weren’t. They used tests for reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and writing. REAP students consistently did better in all language skills from Year 1 to Year 3.
This is why the Ministry of Education brought REAP to all schools in Singapore. Later studies showed that the positive effects continued. Now, the REAP method is part of the national curriculum.
